FAQs about Child Therapy


What can I expect when I bring my child in for therapy?

I structure my therapy sessions so children have a sense of predictability and control while attending sessions. Depending on the age of your child, and your child’s needs, parents/guardians will either sit in on the whole session or spend part or most of the session hanging out in the waiting room. All sessions are structured to do 30-45 minutes of work time with children, 5-15 minutes of free time (to get the wiggles out and process through body movement), followed by 5-15 minutes of reviewing therapeutic work with parents/guardians.

What is happening in the therapy room with my child when I’m not there?

I’m glad you asked! Your child and I will be hard at work on art projects, play, reading, moving around, and generally making a mess. In every session your child is learning a new skill or concept, processing thoughts and feelings, learning how to use their body to calm their mind, and moving their body to help their mind process all that they have learned.

Do I get to see and hear what my child has been working on/learning?

Yes! During  the last 15 minutes of each session I have parents join the therapy session. During that time I have your child tell you all that they have learned or show you what they have been working on. This serves a few purposes: 1. It gives an opportunity to solidify what your child has been learning through the medium of teaching. 2. It is a reminder for your child of the important concepts or skills that were learned. 3. Parents will be informed of what their child will need support practicing during the week.

Will our family ever be a part of therapy?

I hope so. I find that children make the greatest growth and healing when the family is involved in the therapy process. Because children are part of a greater system (the family), they do not always have the capacity to make changes for themselves unless the whole system makes changes with them. When families participate and learn new ways of communicating, interacting, and parenting, the child has a greater capacity to make their own changes.

Do we have to do anything between sessions?

Yes! Homework and practice are a critical part of healing and growth. Because most of a child’s experience and time is outside of therapy, I provide homework for your child to work on between sessions. Because children need support to practice certain concepts or skills, it is important that parents provide support and reminders for children to practice or do the homework.

What therapeutic models do you work from?

I utilize a holistic approach, and pull from three main models in my work with children: Attachment theory, Polyvagal theory (Somatic approaches), and play/expressive therapies. Other models that inform my work include Comprehensive Energy Psychology (including Emotional-Freedom Technique) and Mindfulness-Based Practices. This may take on a variety of forms, and every treatment plan I make is tailored to your child’s unique and specific needs.
